Epic Cobia flyfishing on Hilton Head Island ! A classic story and a long tradition.

Oh what a hot topic. Things have changed a lot since the first days of cobia fishing here in the Lowcountry. We have learned so much thanks to the efforts of some people who really care about our unique waters and all the beautiful creatures in it. I just hope its not to late and that the regulations are enough. During my travels, I see almost everywhere I go that their fisheries are completely wiped out. Talking to the locals its always the same thing . “You should have seen it back in the day” . I used to think that was simply what they all say until I had to experience it for myself here in my local waters. In the early 90’s when there were only two or three of us that even new about sight fishing for…

Hilton Head Islands Best Redfishing Secret ! Capt ByronSewell in Palmetto Dunes resort!

Listen to my great friend Cindy Rodriguez! She sounds like a little girl at her tenth birthday party getting a new puppy! The energy is so contagious, some people never grow up. Lets hope none of us ever have to. The palmetto lagoon system is unreal! 11 miles of saltwater lagoon winding through a hardwood forest. A magical concoction of Saltwater and forest birds mixed with forest critters and river dwellers. If you added all the time Captain Trent and I have spent exploring the waterways it would probably add up to a few years. No kidding, we have been fishing it since we were puppy drum.  Capt Trent owns Palmetto Lagoon charters and is one of my best friend’s and fishing guru. Eventhough I out fish him all the time. Hahaha Don’t tell him I said that! We have so many stories between us…

Hilton Head Island’s annual explosive Shark and Biomass migration Is just around the corner!

Every year about this time we get the call. My Central Florida ocean brothers letting me know the bite has begun! Starting in June, a massive concentration of sea life or “BIO MASS” marches north following the 70 degree tempature line as our waters warm with the summer months. This Migration has been going on for millions of years… Yes, millions. The variety of Sea life is mind blowing. It’s like the ultimate live seafood gumbo. For Native Son guides its like an annual prize fight. The Preparation, planning, and visualizing during the winter months is sure to pay off. Our favorite adversaries showing up to challenge our fly casting and light tackle skills. Tasty Tripletail, cruising Cobia, aerobatic King Mackeral, ferocious Blacktip Sharks, and so many other sea creatures spice up our local waters. This is truly a Native’s favorite time to search for…

Beating Cancer and catching Redfish on Hilton Head Island !

What a great day fishing with my new friends Dale and “Auntie” Becky Hudack ! We had to work at it, but like a light switch Mother Nature decided to turn on!! Becky fought this giant Bull redfish on the super-light rod for what seemed like a hour!! She is getting a custom replica made by the amazing artists at Greys Taxidermy to put on the wall. She said, “Byron this is a big deal! I was fighting for my life not long ago, not knowing if I was ever going to fish again. Look at me now!” I am so lucky to have this job and lifestyle. I am also lucky to be able to Guide in the legendary Palmetto Dunes Resort on their amazing, eleven mile, fifty year old saltwater lagoon system. I have been working with Palmetto Lagoon charters and my fishing…
